Joe B. Marshall Appointed to Natural Resources Steering Panel

Natural Resources Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson has appointed two prominent Nova Scotians to a panel that will lead the development of a new strategy governing the province's natural resources.
Joe Marshall is the executive director of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians and the Mi'kmaq Rights Initiative, and an associate professor at Cape Breton University. He is also a teacher at the Eskasoni Training and Education Centre.

With the sale of 170,000 acres of Irving lands (slated for April 2, 2009) a large chunk of Nova Scotia lakes/wilderness may disappear behind No Trespassing signs and locked gates.
J.D. Irving Ltd. is selling approximately 170,000 acres of timberlands and lakes in Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia felt they were not given consideration threw the Made-in-Nova-Scotia Process.
The Made-in-Nova Scotia Process is the forum for the Mi’kmaq, Nova Scotia and Canada to resolve issues related to Mi’kmaq treaty rights, Aboriginal rights, including Aboriginal title, and Mi’kmaq governance. The participants are the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia as represented by the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs, the provincial government and the federal government.

With the historic signing of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia Nationhood Proclamation on Treaty Day (October 1, 2008), the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs and Kwilmuk Maw-klusuagn Negotiation Office felt it was time to bring the Mi’kmaq leadership together by hosting a two day governance conference at the Ramada Plaza in Dartmouth on March 11 & 12, 2009.
During the two day conference the Mi’kmaq leadership talked about and what steps need to be addressed, and how to build Mi’kmaq governance. The Mi’kmaq leadership also recognize that this is just the first step and community involvement is crucial.

Halifax, NS – As part of Treaty Day celebrations, the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs released the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia Nationhood Proclamation. The Proclamation represents an important milestone for the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia in their quest to implement Mi'kmaq rights in the province of Nova Scotia.
In a ceremonial signing at Province House in Halifax on Treaty Day, October 1st, 2008, Mi’kmaq Grand Chief, Ben Sylliboy, sign the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia Nationhood Proclamation in the presence of Chiefs, councillors, elders and Nova Scotia government representatives.

The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs and Kwilmu’k Maw-klusuaqn Negotiation Office (KMKNO) are pleased to announce the release of the landmark Mi’kmaq Ecological Knowledge Study Protocol or MEKS Protocol. Formally approved on November 22, 2007 and officially released on January 24, 2008, the MEKS Protocol is intended to establish guidelines and standards on how Mi’kmaq ecological knowledge will be collected, shared and distributed within the province of Nova Scotia. It allows the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia to both protect and preserve their traditional knowledge of the land and its resources.

On June 13th we will be meeting the Annapolis Valley community and attending their community supper. Roger Lewis will do a presentation on the archaeological reconnaisance work he has done in the area, and Kelly Peters will present the Crown Land information he has gathered. On June 14th, we have been invited to meet with the Paq'tnkek elders and have lunch with them afterwards. Next week we will meet the Elders and Youth in Millbrook.
